Here’s a constipation home remedy that probably hasn’t occurred to you… EFT Tapping.
Tapping helps to calm the nervous system. Your autonomic nervous system governs your digestion. When your nerves are calm and you de-stress, your bowel can relax.
When my colleague, Kathy, and I worked with people who had chronic constipation, some of the best results happened when we dealt with their stress, stuck beliefs and emotional issues.
We found that, for these clients, the most useful constipation home remedy was EFT Tapping. Tapping involves gentle tapping with your fingers on meridian points on the head and torso. These are the same points that are used in acupuncture, except no needles are involved.
While you keep your energy balanced with the tapping, you can safely and effectively release stress, old beliefs, fears and uncomfortable memories that are keeping you stuck.
As Dr. Christiane Northrup points out, beliefs are held in the body’s fascia – a kind of sheath of connective tissue around the muscles and organs that lies underneath your skin – which is also where the meridians are located.
When you tap on the meridian points, you can release the old beliefs that are stored in the fascia. And when you release stuck beliefs and daily stresses, you also give your bowel permission to release what it’s holding onto.
Is there a fear or negative experience you’re holding on to in your life?
It could be a regret, a resentment, or something you feel angry or guilty about. Or maybe someone treated you unfairly and you just can’t let it go.
Do you believe there isn’t enough for you in life, so you have to hold on to everything, just in case? Is your house filled with clutter? Do you keep clothes you no longer wear, or hold on to relationships that you no longer enjoy, or a job you don’t like?
Or perhaps your bowel can’t let go because you were embarrassed or scolded when you were a child and had to use the bathroom – or didn’t get there in time. Your brain decided you better stay in control all the time, even if it means not releasing your poop when you need to.
Many of us are taught that this perfectly natural process is something to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. This is a bizarre teaching when you realize that, if you don’t poop, you die. Literally. Our lives depend on pooping, so why should we be embarrassed about it?
In my experience, the only people who talk about poop without embarrassment are dog owners and parents of infants and small children. (And presumably, gastroenterologists, but I haven’t met a lot of them…)
Louise Hay says the probable cause of chronic constipation is, “Refusing to release old ideas. Stuck in the past. Sometimes stinginess.” This may or may not apply to you, so take a look at your own life and see where you might have stuck places.
Her constipation home remedy is the following affirmation:
“As I release the past, the new and fresh and vital enter. I allow life to flow through me.”
You can use EFT Tapping as a natural remedy for constipation in two ways:
1. Tap on the physical symptoms – cramping, constipation, pain, gas, etc.
2. Tap on an experience, memory or issue where you feel stuck in your life. This may seem to have nothing to do with your constipation but there is no real separation between your mind and body – your thoughts affect your physical health.
Before starting the tapping, take a deep breath and consider this…
Is there something you’re still holding onto? It could be a recent experience or one from the past. Just let something pop into your mind – don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it.
Give it an intensity rating of zero to 10. Zero would mean you have no emotional charge on the issue at all, while 10 means it is a highly charged issue for you.
Not sure what number to give it? Guess. Your guess will be accurate.

Here’s a tapping script to get you started…
KC: Even though I’m constipated, I choose to relax and let go.
KC: Even though I’m still stuck because of what happened, I’m willing to release it.
KC: Even though my body is still holding onto it, I accept myself anyway and I’m ready to let it go from my cells.
EB: I’m constipated
SE: I’m stuck because of what happened
UE: My body is holding onto it
UN: I can’t let it go
CH: I’m still stuck
CB: It’s making me constipated
UA: I’m stuck
H: I can’t let go.
EB: What if I don’t have to be stuck?
SE: What if it’s okay to let go?
UE: I don’t have to forgive what happened
UN: Unless I choose to
CH: I want to let it go from my cells
CB: It’s safe to let it go
UA: It’s safe for me to relax
H: I choose to release the past and I flow easily with the present.
Now take a deep breath and slowly let it out. Recheck the intensity level and see if the number has gone down. This is an intuitive process. You will feel in your body when you are more relaxed.
You can tap through this again if you need to. Or use your own words.
Tapping is a very forgiving process, so don’t get hung up on the words.
You can use EFT tapping as a constipation home remedy without saying any words at all. Just focus on the feeling in your body – for example, pain or cramping in your lower abdomen – while you tap through the points.
Then remember back to the earliest time in your life when you felt a similar feeling in your body and tap on that.
Another way to tap is to simply talk to yourself about whatever is bothering you, as if you were talking to a close friend, while you tap from point to point. This is called continuous tapping. You don’t need a set-up statement or any special words, you just let it rip.
For example, you might have started tapping on, “This chronic constipation is really bothering me, I hate it and I’m fed up with it…” but then you switch to, “And another thing I can’t stand is the way my boss always gives me projects on Friday afternoon just before I’m about to leave for the weekend…” and you carry on about that or other subjects.
As you talk and tap, you may find that you remember something you didn’t even realize was bothering you! Tapping on that will help to relax the tightness of constipation.
If you have tapped on an emotional issue and you feel worse after tapping, it usually means another layer of the issue has come up. When that happens, keep tapping. It’s fine to tap on “Even though I feel worse now, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
After tapping, you may feel relaxed or tired. That’s normal.
