This article talks about the nine proven topical remedies that are known to relieve and soothe the inflammation and itchiness of eczema. When your skin barrier is damaged and broken from rashes and scratching, it must be restored for relief.

If you want to prevent eczema, or finish with it, you’ll have to deal with the triggers of this skin condition. This is crucial whether the sufferer is a baby, child or adult. The triggers can be nutritional, environmental, or stress-based.

Home Remedies for Eczema
What is Eczema?

Eczema - sometimes spelled ecsema - is similar to atopic dermatitis.

The terms are often used interchangeably by doctors. It is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is not contagious and has one or all of these symptoms:

Patches of skin that are…

  • Itchy
  • Scaly, crusty
  • Blistered
  • Darker or lighter than other skin
  • Thickened, leathery
  • Red, looks like a rash

While it’s hard not to scratch when you have eczema, scratching doesn’t help a whole lot and may just make your skin bleed. Eczema tends to occur in people who have allergies.

The usual treatment for eczema is corticosteroids. Unfortunately, as this article points out, these drugs are “…associated with deranged metabolism, growth suppression and increased susceptibility to infections.”

So definitely not the greatest for infants and children. Or grown-ups, for that matter, since growth hormones and healthy metabolism are part of what keeps us young!

The Mayo Clinic says that additional side effects of oral corticosteroids include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High blood sugar (with diabetic potential)
  • Glaucoma – pressure in the eyes
  • Weight gain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Slow wound healing, thinning skin
  • Mood and memory problems

Topically-applied corticosteroids “…can lead to thin skin, red skin lesions and acne.” (Mayo Clinic) How that would help with eczema is beyond me, but I’m not a medical person.

Home Remedies for Eczema
9 Skin Soothers and Moisturizers

Do not use olive oil on your skin. It is NOT a good natural remedy for eczema because it breaks your skin barrier and adds to the problem. It’s still excellent for eating and cooking, though.

1. Sunflower Seed Oil

...is one of the best home remedies for eczema when you need a healing moisturizer. It combats inflammation, helps your skin barrier to recover (very important) and reduces itching. Look for the oleodistillate form of sunflower seed oil (SOD.)

2. Virgin Coconut Oil

...is another excellent skin lubricant and a soothing natural remedy for eczema. Virgin Coconut Oil is anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.

3. Topical B12

Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) in a cream form has proven to relieve atopic dermatitis. Helps both adults and children.

4. Aloe vera

Aloe vera works well for all sorts of skin disorders. It is antibacterial, antifungal and speeds up the healing of wounds – so it’s good for broken skin if you’ve been scratching.

Aloe vera relieves lesions from atopic dermatitis and skin plaques from psoriasis.

5. Hemp Seed Oil

Pharmacologists Tabassum and Hamdani state that, not only does hemp seed oil treat eczema but you can use it for “a host of other skin diseases like dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis/cradle cap, varicose eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus and acne roseacea.”

Hemp seed oil is a natural anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-fungal that strengthens your skin, so it’s an excellent home remedy for eczema.

6. Chamomile

Among home remedies for eczema, chamomile cream is the one that works just as well as hydrocortisone cream but without the side effects, according to at least one study. So it’s very effective!

Do not use chamomile if you are allergic to ragweed or other plants in the Aster (Asteraceae) family.

7. Mineral Salt Baths

According to scientists in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Kiel, Germany, “Bathing in a magnesium-rich Dead Sea salt solution improves skin barrier function, enhances skin hydration, and reduces inflammation in atopic dry skin.”

The Dead Sea is famous for its ability to help with skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis. So, if you’re planning a vacation, the Dead Sea is the place to go!

Or you can stay home and get excellent results with…

Dead Sea Salts

Soak in a bath containing 10% Dead Sea salts. Their high mineral content is soothing and strengthening for skin with eczema.

Epsom salts

Epsom salts are another form of high-magnesium salt. When you use them in a bath, you are applying this healing mineral directly to skin and absorbing it. There is also a magnesium spray you may find refreshing.

Since most people in industrialized countries are magnesium-deficient, and since magnesium-rich mineral baths are one of the most effective home remedies for eczema (and psoriasis), it seems logical that taking magnesium supplements will also benefit you (unless you have kidney damage.)

Eczema is very much stress-related, and magnesium is a calming mineral. Adding mineral drops to your water or herbal tea is an easy way to absorb more magnesium.

8. Sun

Heliotherapy or sunlight is a traditional remedy for many health conditions.

Sun bathing or narrow band ultraviolet B (UVB) light in combination with  mineral baths has been shown to have even more powerful healing effects for eczema and psoriasis than mineral baths alone.

Probably, this is why the Dead Sea is so good for skin conditions... the sun, the mineral-rich water, and the relaxation of being outdoors in nature all combine to create a healing effect.

9. Witch hazel

(Hamamelis virginiana) According to the University of Maryland, witch hazel cream is one of the most useful home remedies for eczema to relieve itching. “Liquid witch hazel can help with "weeping" or oozing eczema.”
