Home Remedies
for Toenail Fungus

Say Goodbye to Fungus Permanently

Since you’re looking for home remedies for toenail fungus, I’m going to tell you the bald truth… You need more than a topical treatment for the surface of your nails.

You can paint tea tree oil on your nails or soak them in apple cider vinegar and borax or Epsom salts. Those are two perfectly good home remedies for toenail fungus.

But, if you want to get rid of your nail fungus permanently, you have to go deeper.

How do I know? Because I had fungal toenails – and I cured them with the information you'll discover in this article.

What causes toenail fungus?

If you search around the internet for the answer to this question, the usual response - even on medical sites - is that your fungal infection is caused by fungus. Or yeast.

Well, duh!

But why is fungus growing in your toenail?

Two reasons:

1. You may have picked up an infection from someone else, or from a warm, damp surface in a locker room or gym.

2. You have fungus and yeast inside your body and the toenail fungus is signalling a bigger problem – like a weakened immune system, blood sugar imbalances (hypoglycaemia, diabetes), disrupted gut flora, an overgrowth of Candida yeast, and/or circulation problems.

Natural remedies for toenail fungus -
what works best?

To get the best results from home remedies for toenail fungus, you need to treat the problem both on the inside and the outside. If you only deal with the infection on your nail, there’s a good chance it will come back.

Here's a four-step plan with the natural remedies for toenail fungus that worked for me. Use all four steps for the most potent effects…

1. Take antifungals and probiotics

Getting the fungus and yeasts inside you under control will help to strengthen your immune system so it can fight off that nail fungus.

These powerful antifungals are crucial home remedies for toenail fungus…

Olive leaf extract

You need a good quality brand or it won’t help. If you’re like me, it can make you very tired – because Olive Leaf is a natural killer of the fungus and yeast in your body – and then your body has to detox (clear out) the die-off.

My solution was to take the Olive Leaf extract at night before bed even though, on the bottle, it says to take it three times a day. Otherwise, I’d fall asleep at work!!

Grapefruit seed extract

Works to control fungus, parasites and bad bacteria. Grapefruit seed extract helps to restore healthy bowel function which is critical to your immune system.

Caution for people with intestinal ulcers.

Cat’s Claw extract

Cat’s Claw is an amazing herb – actually it’s bark from the vine Uncaria tomentosa – that is antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, helps repair DNA, and boosts your immune system. And it's a great home remedy for toenail fungus.

Garlic and aged garlic

Garlic has been used as a healing plant for centuries. Its antifungal, antioxidant and immune-strengthening qualities make it one of the classic home remedies for toenail fungus. If you don't care for the taste, you can use aged garlic in capsule form.

Eating fresh garlic in salad dressings and other foods is valuable. You can also use it as a topical remedy - see #3 below.

Caprylic acid capsules

Caprylic acid is a powerful antifungal from coconut that works extremely well for most people, unless you react poorly to coconut.

It has proven to combat many types of infection including Candida albicans, which plays a big role in fungal infections.

Probiotics

A daily necessity.

I would continue with probiotics even after the toenail fungus is cleared. Why?

Because most of us have disrupted gut flora from stress, antibiotics and other drugs, alcohol, a high carbohydrate diet, and pollutants. Probiotics give you the boost you need to restore healthy bacteria in your gut, control fungus and yeast, and keep your immune system functioning well.

Can’t I just take one antifungal?

You can but it’s more effective to use a selection of three or four antifungals so you can rotate them. That means you take a different one each day for three or four days and then start over again. Doing this means you won’t sensitize to any of them and they will continue to work well for you.

Once you’ve cleared your fungus problem, you probably won’t need to continue taking the antifungals unless you have a flare-up. (Although I would continue with daily probiotics.)

These antifungal home remedies for toenail fungus start an internal detox process when they kill the fungus and yeasts inside you. So you may feel worse for a few days before you feel better.

If that happens, get lots of rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid sweets and alcohol because they only make it worse.

2. Eat an antifungal diet

An antifungal diet is one of the most powerful home remedies for toenail fungus because it starves the fungus and keeps it from returning.

What is an antifungal diet?

You eat real foods – meat, fish, poultry, eggs, good quality fats and oils, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

No grains, flour products, junk food, processed foods, soda pop, dairy, sugar, or fermented foods like alcohol or vinegar.

Why?

Because sweets, refined carbohydrates and alcohol are the food of the fungus and yeast that cause nail fungus.

But it gets worse. When you have an overgrowth of fungus and yeast in your body, they make you crave sweets. Fungus and yeast are very opportunistic.

Until the fungus is cleared, it’s also a good idea to keep your fruit intake low, or be sure to eat only fruits with the lowest glycemic index like blueberries, plums, peaches, and grapefruit.

Grains and flour products damage your gut so toxins escape and migrate to other parts of your body, causing inflammation and allergic reactions. Corn, and sometimes other grains, contain fungus - which won't help your toenails.

The Paleo Diet is an excellent anti-fungal diet

The easiest and most delicious way to make your food into a home remedy for toenail fungus is to eat a Paleo diet. It worked for me.

Why? Because on the Paleo diet there are no grains, dairy or high-glycemic foods to feed the fungus. By making that change, my nail fungus practically disappeared. (I had to file it down after soaking, but it didn’t grow back.)

The Paleo diet - also known as Paleolithic or Primal - and the anti-fungals listed above made a bigger permanent change in my toenails than anything else I’ve tried.

On the other hand, my dad and my aunt - who both had severe toenail fungus - just kept right on eating lots of sugar, white flour products and processed foods. Their toenails got worse and worse to the point where they were so thick, only a doctor with a special implement could cut them.

Toenail fungus is not just a beauty problem – it’s a sign that things are seriously out of balance inside you. Once you restore that balance, you won’t have fungal nails. You’re also going to keep yourself from getting worse health problems.

If you are pre-diabetic or have Type 2 diabetes, the Paleo diet will help you to balance your blood sugar and insulin response naturally. Blood sugar problems often go hand-in-hand with nail fungus.

3. Use topical home remedies for toenail fungus

Coconut oil (caprylic acid)

Coconut oil contains antifungal caprylic acid. As well as being a powerful home remedy for toenail fungus, it's proven to control many types of chronic infection. Dab it on your toenails 2 or 3 times a day.

Tea Tree oil

...is a well-known antifungal. You can use it in different ways...

  • Dab it on your toenail fungus. Cover with an adhesive strip to seal it against your nail for daytime inside shoes, or before bed.
  • Pour some into a foot bath of warm water and soak your feet for 10 or 15 minutes.

Garlic and honey

Rub raw garlic cloves on your toenails as a nail fungus home remedy.

To reduce the smell, mix raw pressed garlic or garlic juice with raw honey and apply it to your nails, then cover with a bandage or tape gauze over it to hold the mixture in place. If you're doing this before bed, put on an old sock to keep the mixture from rubbing off. Honey is anti-bacterial.

4. Get some exercise

Exercise is one of the most important home remedies for toenail fungus.

Why?

Because poor circulation goes with toenail fungus, especially in older people. So find a way to move and get your blood flowing.

Any kind of movement will help. Walking, dancing, swimming, skating, riding a bicycle or a horse, Tai chi and Qi Gong are all great choices.

A great way to move your circulation and your lymph is with a rebounder or mini-trampoline. The lymph is a big part of your immune system. But you must do some kind of movement or massage to move the lymphatic fluid and clear out toxins.

If your balance is poor, get a rebounder with a support bar you can hold onto and set it in front of your TV. Even very gentle bouncing, while sitting on the mini trampoline will stimulate your circulation and benefit your immune system.

Yoga is another fabulous choice for stimulating circulation and healing your body. There are classes for all ages, or you can practice it gently at home.

Your body is talking to you

These natural remedies for toenail fungus should do a good job of clearing up the problem permanently.

When you’re prone to nail fungus, your nails are giving you valuable information about what’s going on inside your body. Don't ignore it because, if you do, things will get worse! If nail fungus returns, now you know the steps you need to take to control it.
