Home Remedy for Arthritis

7 crucial natural
anti-inflammatories for arthritis

When you need a home remedy for arthritis, natural anti- inflammatories are the key to stopping pain and suffering.

The old conventional thinking about arthritis said that it was caused by a lifetime of wear and tear on your joints.

That thinking didn’t entirely make sense because, if it were true, every older person would have arthritis – and not everyone does.

Then a 2011 study at Stanford University showed that arthritis is caused mostly by low-grade inflammation. Injury to a joint – like tearing your meniscus – may also trigger arthritis. Whenever there is injury, there’s also inflammation.

So inflammation is the big player in osteoarthritis – and that’s why all the natural remedies for arthritis on this page are powerful anti inflammatories. They provide nutrients that your body absolutely must have to reduce your pain and swelling and make it easier for you to live your life.

Please note that it’s unusual to get the full effect of a natural remedy from one dose. People generally notice improvements after a few days or sometimes longer, depending on your condition.

What can you do about arthritis?

Here are four effective steps… This article focusses on the first step - anti-inflammatories that are arthritis natural cures.

Arthritis doesn't happen overnight, so for best results, when you've finished reading this page, please take a few minutes to read through the articles linked to steps 2 and 3.

1. Use natural anti-inflammatories. Relieve pain and inflammation with a good home remedy for arthritis that combats inflammation.

2. Heal your gut. Gastrointestinal problems (dysbiosis) and leaky gut syndrome trigger inflammation in your joints and throughout your body.

3. Eat foods that reduce inflammation and promote healing and avoid foods that make arthritis symptoms much worse. This is crucial for all types of arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis.

4. Use natural products. Chemical products make inflammation worse and contribute to dysbiosis.

7 essential natural
anti-inflammatories for arthritis

1. MSM – Methyl Sulfonyl Methane

MSM is well known as an effective anti inflammatory and should definitely be on your list as a top home remedy for arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study at Southwest College Research Institute, participants with osteoarthritis took 3 grams of MSM twice a day for 12 days. They reported “significant decreases in… pain and physical function impairment.”  They also found it easier to perform the “activities of daily living.”

Dr. James LaValle says the dosage range for this home remedy for arthritis is from 2 to 15 grams a day (or 2,000 to 15,000 mg.) So clearly you can play with the amount of MSM you take to see how much works best for you. Dr. LaValle also says MSM has no known toxicity or serious side effects.

My one caution is this: If you take too much MSM on an empty stomach, you might have a bit of tummy trouble. To prevent that, build up your dosage slowly and take the MSM with meals. But this is a minor side effect, especially when you compare it with some pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories that caused blood clots and stroke.

MSM is a white powder that comes in capsule or powder form and basically has no taste, so you can mix it into smoothies.

MSM helps to restore the lining of your intestines. That lining keeps toxins in your gut where they belong instead of leaking out into your bloodstream and to your joints where they cause inflammation.

MSM goes to Hollywood…

Leading man and Academy Award winner, James Coburn, suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 22 years.

Then Coburn met Dr. Ronald Lawrence, a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Lawrence put the actor on 7 grams of MSM twice a day.

Coburn said his pain simply stopped! Dr. Lawrence warns that this is unusually fast, as MSM can take up to 6 weeks to show an effect. However, within 3 days, Coburn began to swing a golf club again and looked forward to returning to tennis.

If joints are already deformed, MSM won’t change that, but it obviously has the potential to make your life easier and more fun.

I think it’s important to note that, over the 22 years, while he was exploring natural remedies for rheumatoid arthritis, James Coburn continued to exercise and made healthy corrections to his diet. Dr. Lawrence considers both of these very important for people with RA.

2. Omega 3 essential fatty acid fish oil –
the home remedy for arthritis from the sea

Almost everyone is low in omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s), especially if you eat a lot of cooked and processed foods. EFA’s are a crucial home remedy for arthritis.

High quality cod liver oil or fish oil give you high levels of omega 3’s and their anti inflammatory effects are known to be even better than conventional treatments for arthritis!

“The biological basis for the effectiveness of fish oil in treating arthritis has been well documented with many positive clinical studies, when compared to traditional pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory agents.” *

Look for quality cod liver oil because fish oils are not all the same. Oils that are not prepared properly can be rancid or lack the nutrients and anti inflammatory benefits you need to relieve arthritis. Or they may contain heavy metal or chemical residues.

Besides being a killer home remedy for arthritis, omega 3 cod liver oil provides fat-soluble vitamins that protect your heart, brain, and teeth. Doctors Maroon and Bost say that nations that eat the most fish have the lowest levels of depression and “neurogenerative disease” – Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS.

Unlike prescription anti inflammatories, there are no life-threatening side effects from EFA’s. Take your fish oil with food, especially if you are prone to belching.

Not recommended for people who are on anti-coagulant medications.

Herbal and plant-based COX-2 inhibitors

COX-2 is an enzyme that promotes inflammation and pain – which is why pharmaceutical drugs for arthritis are often made to block COX-2.

Unfortunately, these medications can have serious or fatal side effects such as blood clots, stroke and kidney failure. At least two of them were withdrawn from the market (rofecoxib and valdecoxib.)

Many people also have gastrointestinal problems from Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs.)

The good news is that there are natural remedies for arthritis from plants and herbs that block COX-2. They include…

  • Turmeric or Curcumin
  • Boswellia serrata
  • Nexrutine®
  • Ginger
  • Holy basil

These are all excellent natural anti inflammatories.

3. Turmeric / Curcumin

To vanquish your arthritis, spice it up!

Curcumin or turmeric root is a traditional anti inflammatory from India with a long history as a successful home remedy for arthritis. It’s even more effective when taken with boswellia serrata.

Here are some tips about turmeric…

  • A naturopath told me that it’s most effective if you can buy the turmeric root fresh. Grate and cook a couple of teaspoons or a tablespoon in oil, such as organic olive oil or coconut oil. I like my turmeric with eggs but you could also mix it with a cooked vegetable dish, chicken or fish.
  • If you can't find the fresh root, buy organic turmeric powder or curcumin capsules.
  • Dr. David Servan-Schreiber says that turmeric needs pepper to activate it, so be sure to add a pinch of pepper.
  • Turmeric is a bright golden-yellow and tends to stain, so avoid getting it on your clothes and clean it up right away if you spill some on the counter.

All that being said, it is a delicious home remedy for arthritis.

I happen to love the taste but, if you don’t, you can take curcumin in capsules. Dr. LaValle recommends, “100-300 mg, 3 times a day with meals, standardized to contain 95% curcuminoids.”

Cautions for people with peptic ulcer, biliary obstruction (gall bladder issues), or on anti-coagulant medications.

4. Boswellia serrata

Boswellia serrata is Frankincense, used for centuries as an anti inflammatory and natural cure for arthritis. It is analgesic, so it reduces pain, and is known to improve knee joint function.

Naturopaths differ on how strong the supplement should be. The recommendations are anywhere from 30% to 65% standardized boswellic acids taken in doses of 300 – 500 mg, three times a day.

As with any natural remedy, start slowly, as some people have stomach upset at first, until the body gets used to the remedy.

Boswellia also works well in a cream that you can apply to sore areas.

5. Nexrutine® - a home remedy for arthritis from the phellodendron tree

Nexrutine® comes from the bark of the Phellodendron amurense or Amur cork tree. Phellodendron is not the same as the philodendron plant.

Not only is it a natural COX-2 inhibitor, but phellodendron reduces gastric acid and helps to protect your stomach lining.

This makes it a great home remedy for arthritis – since one of the biggest problems with pharmaceutical COX-2 blockers and NSAIDs is that they can give you ulcers. Nature clearly got the last laugh here.

Phellodendron bark is known in traditional Chinese medicine as a strong anti inflammatory.

Not recommended for pregnant women.

6. Ginger root

You may know about ginger for nausea, if you’ve taken it for motion sickness or morning sickness.

But did you know that it’s also a great anti inflammatory and pain killer?

Ginger is a centuries-old home remedy for arthritis. Capsules will give you the strongest effect, but you can also use grated ginger root in cooking, freshly-made tea or home-made ginger ale.

Dr. James LaValle suggests that when you have arthritis, look for a 20% extract ginger supplement, which is quite strong. Because of the potency, he recommends you take it with food.

7. Holy basil

Holy basil inhibits COX-2 inflammation, which is key to reducing arthritis symptoms.

But this amazing herb is much more than a home remedy for arthritis. It also offers you these benefits…

  • Supports your adrenals and lowers cortisol,
  • Relaxes hypertension from stress,
  • Helps to regulate your blood sugar
  • Is anti-microbial
  • Fights cancer
  • Modulates your immune system
  • Protects your brain, heart and liver.

All in all, a very useful natural remedy for arthritis and your health in general!

Caution for people with gastrointestinal ulcers.
