9 Natural Cures for Soothing Relief

Ooh… that painful feeling! When you need a home remedy for indigestion, these 9 natural cures bring you powerful relief.

Indigestion is a subject that I know well because I was cursed with digestive problems for many years. But over time, I figured out what was causing it and how to choose a home remedy for indigestion that actually works.

Why do you have indigestion?

First, it helps to know WHY you have digestive trouble, so you can deal with the causes and prevent future problems.

Chronic indigestion can lead to much worse health problems like colon cancer, Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis.

Research on leaky gut syndrome shows that digestive issues even play a role in conditions that might seem completely unrelated to your gut, like autoimmune conditions, inflammation and arthritis, brain deterioration, and hormone-related disorders like breast cancer.

Causes of indigestion

This is a long list, but it will give you some good clues about what kind of home remedy for indigestion you need to focus on, especially if you have chronic digestive issues.

  • Stress, anxiety – Stress is one of the most common causes of digestive upset.
  • Lack of enzymes – Especially a problem as we advance in years.
  • Dysbiosis – When your gut flora is out of balance, it can’t help you digest your food properly.
  • Food sensitivities or allergies – even if you don’t think you have them, it’s a good idea to find out with some kind of testing.
  • Gluten allergy or intolerance, grains, dairy foods – The most common allergenic foods.
  • Lack of sleep – Your nervous system governs digestion. Is it exhausted from trying to work overtime?
  • Leaky gut syndrome
  • Mercury fillings
  • Eating too much
  • Poor food combining
  • Processed foods – The purpose of food is nutrition. Processed foods don’t contain any.
  • Too much caffeine
  • Sugar, alcohol
  • Foods cooked in deep-fried fat – Once fat is overheated by deep frying, it becomes a toxin that is very difficult for your body to process.
  • Too much spicy food
  • Not eating often enough. Your body can’t run all day on a cup of coffee and a bagel.
  • Not eating protein - too many carbs and not enough protein can make you feel sick
  • Chemical exposure from products you use daily
  • Chlorinated water – Chlorine and other chemicals wreak havoc on your digestive tract and disrupt your healthy gut flora.

1. Digestive enzymes

I consider digestive enzymes an essential home remedy for indigestion that everyone should have on hand.

Carry them with you wherever you go. At the first hint of a digestive problem or before eating, take a couple of enzymes to help break down the food in your stomach.

I’ve found that the most effective type is a broad-spectrum enzyme with…

  • Amylase to break down carbohydrates
  • Protease to break down proteins
  • Lipase to break down fats
  • Ox bile to further break down fats – especially helpful for people with gallbladder trouble or no gallbladder

If you have indigestion due to stomach flu or a regular cold or flu, take enzymes several times a day between meals.

Colds and flu are caused by virus. Digestive enzymes break down the protein coating of the virus, and helps to kill it so you can heal faster.

2. Peppermint oil and peppermint tea

Peppermint is a classic home remedy for indigestion.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, peppermint tea is considered safe, even if you drink it many times a day, unless you have GERD.

Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules relieve gas (flatulence), abdominal bloating, nausea, diarrhea and pain.

The enteric coating ensures the peppermint oil is released in the intestines where it can do the most good, not in your stomach. Don’t take peppermint oil caps with antacids or they may dissolve in your stomach and cause heartburn.

As a home remedy for indigestion, peppermint…

  • Contains menthol and methyl salicylate which reduce spasms (antispasmodic)
  • Relaxes muscles of the stomach and digestive tract, and allows gas to pass instead of bloating you like a balloon
  • Improves the flow of bile in the gall bladder so you can digest fats more easily


  • Peppermint is not recommended for people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or hiatal hernia.
  • Do not use peppermint with infants or small children. If peppermint is applied to an infant’s face, it can cause spasms that endanger breathing.

3. Ginger root

Like peppermint, ginger root (rhizome) is an excellent home remedy for indigestion and gas. It has been used as both a spice and natural medicine for over 2,000 years.

What will ginger root do for you?

  • relieve your stomach ache and indigestion.
  • relieve nausea and vomiting from seasickness, travel, or pregnancy (morning sickness.)
  • reduce cramps and spasms
  • cleanses the colon
  • anti-inflammatory – helps reduce pain
  • helps with arthritis, too!

Ginger can be taken as tea, in capsules, or as a tincture. You can add it to your food, or make home-made gingerale with fresh ginger root and honey.

When you make ginger tea – which is my favourite home remedy for indigestion – you can either buy a good quality organic version in teabags, or you can make it from fresh ginger root.


  • Do not give ginger to children under the age of 2.
  • Caution for people taking aspirin or other blood thinners.
  • As usual, pregnant women are advised to check with their doctors before taking ginger.
  • Very high or very concentrated doses might cause stomach distress unless taken with food.

4. Fennel seed

You may know fennel root as a vegetable. But did you know the seeds are a fantastic home remedy for indigestion?

Fennel seed has been used for centuries to relieve ...

Fennel is relaxing to the digestive system. Chew a few seeds with or after a meal if you’re having distress.

Chia seeds contain high levels of the relaxing minerals calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Of all plant sources, they are the richest in omega 3 essential fatty acids – valuable nutrients for digestion and for your nervous system. Chia acts as a prebiotic – the food of good bacteria – to improve digestion.

You can take chia in capsules or use the seeds to make chia gel. A tablespoon of chia gel before eating soothes digestion. You can also mix chia into your smoothie or juice.

  • you don’t eat processed, junk and deep-fried foods which are very hard on digestion.
  • it’s low-sugar and no-grain so it helps you heal your leaky gut syndrome and dysbiosis that are causes of indigestion.
  • you eat real food like fish, chicken, eggs, meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and healthy fats – all foods your body can recognize and use. These are the foods your body, digestion, and nervous system need to heal and function properly.

9. Go toxin-free for
