9 Natural Remedies to Stop Migraines Now!

When you need a home remedy for migraine, you’ll find fast relief for your throbbing head in this article, along with tips for preventing future migraines. Discover nutrients, herbs, mind-body methods and lifestyle changes for lasting migraine relief.

1. The coffee home remedy for migraine

Dr. John Lee says that migraines are caused by enlarged blood vessels in the brain.

To shrink those blood vessels back to normal, he recommends that, as soon as you feel a migraine coming on, drink a cup of black coffee and put ice packs on either side of your forehead. This should prevent the migraine from developing.

The old home remedy for migraine where you put slices of potato on your temples and leave them there until they’re warm is probably a precursor to using ice packs.

2. The brain chemistry
home remedy for migraine

People with migraines are low in serotonin, the feel-good brain chemical.

To boost your level of serotonin and stop that migraine, 50-100 mg of 5HTP should do the trick.

Tryptophan and 5HTP or 5-Hydroxytryptophan are serotonin precursors. This study found that low levels of tryptophan and serotonin make migraine symptoms worse.

Here’s another home remedy for migraine to raise your serotonin levels:

Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons says you will absorb tryptophan better by eating regular meals, then eating a carbohydrate such as baked sweet potato before bed or about 3 hours after dinner.

Yes, you can have butter on it, if you’re not dairy-sensitive. Or enhance the flavour with some delicious flax oil and Himalayan sea salt. Do not eat any protein with it.

Dr. DesMaisons explains that when you eat this pre-bed carb without protein, it helps the tryptophan floating around in your body to jump the blood-brain barrier. Now your brain can use it to make serotonin.

3. Herbal home remedies for migraines

Butterbur – To prevent and treat migraines. There's a possibility of liver damage if pyrrolizidine alkaloids are not properly removed, so check the manufacturer. Product should say “PA-free.”

A clinical trial has also shown that butterbur reduces allergy symptoms just as well as antihistamines.

Feverfew – Needs to be taken regularly to inhibit histamine that can expand blood vessels. Not for immediate relief of headache but works as a preventative. Do not take during pregnancy.

Gingko biloba – Herbal home remedy for migraine that improves brain functioning and enhances blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

Ginger root – Powdered or fresh, anti-inflammatory ginger root relieves migraines, nausea and vomiting. Anti-microbial and anti-oxidant, so it combats toxins in your system and helps you heal.

4. The mind-body
home remedy for migraine

This home remedy for migraine seems almost too simple, yet it is surprisingly effective for many people. It comes from the work of best-selling author and MD, John Sarno, who found that migraines are caused by repressed anger. Studies confirm that held-in anger is a common cause of headache and migraine.

Anger is often considered an “unacceptable” emotion, especially for women, which may be the reason almost three times as many women as men experience migraines.

Children get migraines, too. 85% of the children in this study experienced repressed anger before their migraine began. The researchers explain that unconscious emotions affect neurotransmitters, blood vessels and the sympathetic nervous system, triggering migraine.

They found that migraine is physical pain caused by psychological distress. This does NOT mean that you’re just imagining it! On the contrary, it’s a very real example of the fact that there is no separation between your mind and your body. The body is where emotions are felt.

Dr. Sarno’s home remedy for migraine is to sit down and think about what anger you are repressing. This may be difficult when you’re in the midst of a blinding, nauseating headache, but he found that actually admitting you could be angry is often enough to stop the migraine.

Dr. Sarno says that when he did this, the migraines he’d had for several years vanished, never to return – even though he didn’t know exactly what his anger was about!

You might not figure out what’s causing your anger until years later. And you may not feel angry since your brain will hide your rage from you behind the migraine pain.

But, says Sarno, the mere act of “acknowledging that a symptom may be emotional in origin is enough to stop it.” (from The Mindbody Prescription by John Sarno, M.D.)

5. The EFT Tapping
home remedy for migraine

According to EFT founder, Gary Craig, EFT tapping is an effective home remedy for migraine 50 to 80 percent of the time. “EFT” stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Craig agrees with Sarno that unconscious emotions can manifest as headaches or other health problems. He notes that migraines are also caused by a disruption in the subtle energies of the body.

EFT Tapping is a fairly quick way to deal with the emotions and energy disruptions that trigger a migraine. You can also use it to relieve stress and sleep problems that may underlie migraines.

6. Avoid migraine-causing estrogens

John Lee, M.D. says that excess estrogen creates swelling in the brain – those enlarged blood vessels that give you a migraine.

Where do excess estrogens come from?

One of the worst culprits is petrochemical products. Unfortunately, this kind of estrogen is fake and doesn’t do anything good for your body – in fact, it blocks your natural hormones from doing their job.

To protect yourself from these false hormones (or xeno hormones,) avoid products and scents from petrochemical sources. Natural and unscented products are the home remedies for migraines that prevent future headaches.

Women tend to have more contact with false estrogens through cosmetic and personal care products, chemically-based scents, and cleaning products than men. Another reason more women than men have migraines!

Fortunately, it’s easy to find natural and organic cosmetics, household products, and scents to replace those dangerous petrochemical versions.

If you suffer from PMS, going natural and unscented with all your products and cleaners will often end your symptoms. If they’re scented, make sure the word “fragrance” is NOT on the ingredient list. It’s code for chemical scent even in products that are supposed to be all-natural.

7. Take magnesium

Magnesium is key to stopping migraines. Why? Because...

  • Estrogen reduces magnesium levels which can cause spasming of blood vessels.
  • Magnesium is relaxing and has proven to help reduce the frequency of migraines.

Magnesium citrate, orotate, glycinate, malate, aspartate, or in mineral drops that you can add to your ginger tea or water are all good choices.

8. Go gluten-free

I’ve heard from several women that they stopped having migraines by going gluten-free.

Braly and Hoggan, authors of Dangerous Grains, say that severe headaches with migraine-like symptoms are “over-represented” in people who have gluten reactions.

They confirm that a gluten-free diet will reduce or stop migraine pain.

9. Eat a Paleo diet

The Paleo diet is the easiest and best-tasting way to go gluten-free, in my humble opinion.

The Paleo diet only includes real, whole foods, so you completely avoid foods that contain toxic additives, preservatives, coloring, artificial sweeteners and many allergens that can trigger migraines.

It helps you keep your blood sugar balanced. Drops in blood sugar due to hunger or lack of proper nutrients can cause headaches.

And because you eat lots of vegetables and animal proteins on the Paleo diet, you receive needed B vitamins. B2 (riboflavin) is said to help reduce migraines.
