Yogurt and other fermented dairy foods are the only dairy products that don’t make acne worse.

Junk food, fast food, sugary refined carbohydrates, processed foods and soda pop are the worst for skin.

Why is junk food such a nightmare for acne? (This is not a trick question.)

Because it’s full of… well… junk! Over-processed, deep-fried fats, sugars, anti-nutrient white flour, chemical preservatives, flavourings and colours… the list goes on.

The cells of your body cannot use this junk so you have to get rid of it.


Some of it gets shoved out through your skin. Your body turns the refined sugars in junk food into saturated fats and gives you oily skin.

Hello acne!

But wait, there’s more!

Yes, it gets worse…

Loren Cordain, PhD, says that there are four steps that lead to acne and cystic acne.

  1. The skin around a hair follicle starts to grow like crazy (follicular hyperkeratosis)
  2. The follicle produces excess oil (sebum)
  3. The follicle gets plugged by cells that clump together (maybe because of all that oil) instead of shedding normally
  4. Infection starts in the plugged-up follicle

He cites research showing that high levels of insulin in your body start this cycle.

And what causes elevated insulin levels?

Junk food! Fast food! Soda! And other highly-sweetened foods and drinks.


Because they’re high in sugars and refined carbohydrates like white flour or white potatoes and dairy products.

In fact, Dr. Cordain suggests you rescue your skin with the Paleo diet, which happens to be one of the top natural remedies for cystic acne and home remedies for acne.

4. Eat Paleo for acne relief...

The Paleo diet is a simple way to avoid the food dangers that lead to acne.

It’s not the kind of diet where you count calories. Instead, you focus on eating proteins, veggies, a little fruit, high-quality fats, nuts (unless you have allergies) and seeds.

This way of eating feeds your body and your skin a wide range of nutrients – and good skin depends heavily on good nutrients.

In fact, Udo Erasmus says you can tell how well-nourished you are by your skin. He says that in the hierarchy of survival, skin is less important than your internal organs and brain, so it ends up last on the list when your body hands around the nutrients.

Buy the best quality food you can afford – organic, free range and grass-fed, whenever possible. If you can’t afford it, don’t beat yourself up. Just make sure you avoid the foods that are most contaminated by pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals – some of which will mess with your hormones (not good for clearing up acne.)

I found that when I went on the Paleo diet, my skin improved and I’ve heard the same from other people.

One thing you should know when you go Paleo is this… If you’ve been eating a lot of sugars and carbs, you could go through carbohydrate withdrawal and grain detox when you make the switch. Here’s an article about why it’s so hard to go off wheat. It’s quite similar to going off sugars and other starches.

5. Balance your hormones.

There’s a clear link between hormones and acne. Teens who hit puberty and women approaching their periods will vouch for that.

If you’re looking for natural remedies for cystic acne, you will especially want to pay attention to balancing your hormones.

Unfortunately, we’re surrounded by chemicals that mess with our normal hormones. They're called "xeno hormones."

Xeno means “foreign.” These foreign, fake hormones (or hormone mimics) take up the receptors in your body where your real hormones are supposed to fit. As you can guess, this causes all sorts of problems, including skin trouble.

What to do?

Here are the natural remedies for cystic acne and home remedies for acne that will help you avoid those dangerous hormone disruptors and mimics.

  • For personal care and laundry, use natural and unscented products. (Men, watch out for those heavily scented aftershave lotions.) Skip the cologne and perfume – they won’t help your skin.
  • Read labels and beware of the word “fragrance” which tells you the product contains a chemically-based scent even in “natural” products.
  • Avoid perchloroethylene dry cleaning; and fire retardants in clothing and furniture.
  • Get the plastics out of your life.
    Hey, I know how hard this is. In fact, it might seem almost impossible. But at least try to cut down on the plastics in your own home. This will seriously reduce your exposure to xenohormones. The plastics you need to watch out for are soft and squishable like bags, wrap and plastic storage containers. If you can tap on it (like your cell phone or laptop) it’s hard plastic that’s less likely to release molecules – unless heated.
  • Use glass or stainless steel containers instead of plastic tubs to store food.
  • Collect your plastic bags and store them in a sealed container like an over-sized cookie tin or industrial-sized jar with a tight-fitting lid. When you take out one bag to use every so often it’s much safer than having a whole house full of plastic bags releasing their fake hormone molecules into your home air (and your body) 24/7.
  • Never cook with non-stick pans.
  • Store opened cans of paint, glue, epoxies and petrochemicals in a shed or garage to keep them out of your indoor air. Even when the containers are closed, molecules are still being released (out-gassing) and you are inhaling them.
  • Avoid canned foods and drinks as much as possible. Some of these processed food containers – plastics and plastic-lined cans – contain hormone disruptors that mess up the signals inside your body.

By the way, if you want to have kids one day, your chances of having a successful pregnancy and a healthier child are far better when you avoid xenohormones and chemical products. Also when you balance your gut flora.
